Goes to show ya! My mother took great pride in all her children’s academic achievements; she fussed over our grades while my father quietly appreciated them. It was assumed that my older brother would go to college. When he came home one day and said that he wanted to open a fruit and vegetable stand, I remember my mother saying that that would be okay, but he would just have to delay his plan until graduation from college, and then, if he still wanted to do that, it would be fine with her. So off he went, to Queens College, with its free tuition, followed by law school at night (no free tuition).

The aim was to help improve working conditions, salaries, and student achievement. The administration voiced concern that it was unprofessional to belong to a union. ) Instinctively, I knew that I had to help make things better, and, together with other teachers (in unity there is strength), I went to the first meetings of what would become the United Federation of Teachers. We were asked to write about our concerns, in order of priority, followed by a discussion of the issues. To my amazement, mainly because I didn’t think it was proper, not that it wasn’t vital, the top of the list was dirty bathrooms and lack of soap and toilet paper.

We were to read all the court documents and come to class prepared to act as a jury and decide the fate of the accused man. Only the professor knew the outcome, and he promised to tell us at the end whether we had reached the same decision as the real jury. I remember sitting in a circle and listening to arguments by other students. Many of them agreed almost immediately that the accused was guilty. Only three of us thought otherwise. After a few more discussions over a few days, everyone in the class, except me, was convinced of the man’s guilt.
