39 Yet, at first glance, and for reasons located primarily in the International movement, 1927 would not appear to be an opportune moment for Nizan to join the party. In October of that year the executive committee of the International recommended that the PCF adopt a 'dass against dass' political strategy. 40 The overtly sectarian, aggressively anti-intellectual tactics of the party between 1928 and 1931 are weIl documented. 41 In particular, the period from 1929 to 1931, when the PCF was domina ted by the unrelentingly sectarian leadership of Barbe and Celor, seemingly obsessed with the sole task of eliminating devationists from the party line, with all the catastrophic consequences that this entailed (reduced party membership, loss of electoral support, reduced sales of L'Humanite), represents a dark period in the history of the party itself.
69 The depth of Nizan's commitment to the Soviet Union was similarly visible a few months later when he described the great steps made by the mass of the Soviet people in terms of cultural development: When you have seen young workers in Moscow or Tashkent . speaking passionately of Gogol or Gorky, you realise that the Soviet people have gained admission to the high culture that was previously a privilege of the bourgeoisie . . The Bolsheviks have succeeded in encouraging men, who twenty years ago could not read, to take an interest in the most difficult works of the imagination.
At a distance from France, Nizan was able to place his own indoctrination and oppression in perspective. From afar, his dass enemies became clearly visible. In Aden the path forward became clear, the alternative strategy was revealed. The tempo of this metamorphis was far from abrupt, however. On the contrary, this was a slow if deep-rooted change occurring over many months with many set-backs and reversals. Aden Arabie itself is a text which doubtless overstates the extent of Nizan's politidsation during 1926 and 1927.
