We ask ourselves in this volume: how do diverse forms of emerging art create ways of being together on a global scale, of acting and living together across vast social, cultural and geographic distances? This text compiles ideas shared during an illuminating few days in February 2008 at Ryerson University; billed as “Toronto/Montreal/Lille: Together Elsewhere,” the conference was the third edition of a biennial event of artistic exchange. Initially a series that saw the exchange of ideas between Ontario and Quebec, this particular conference featured the inclusion of an international element with representation from France.

As the schools involved in the conference are themselves centres of art education and production, the conference theme was examined largely in relation to new media technologies and innovation in the arts. To investigate these issues, the conference was divided into three sub-themes that paralleled the interests and expertise of our three partners. ” Through the combination of image, sound, and movement, cinema, more than any other medium, transports us together elsewhere or connects us within the abstract duration and location of the site of projection.

What we build today in cyberspace, we’ll build tomorrow in nanospace. The new art media is immaterial and moist, numinous and grounded, while the technoetic mind both inhabits the body and is distributed across time and space. Art and reality are becoming syncretic as these contradictions are reconciled, and differences melded. Syncretic reality emerges from the cultural coherence of intensive interconnectivity, from quantum coherence at the base of our world-building, and from the spiritual coherence of our multi-layered consciousness (Ascott, 2007).
